29th May 2001, Bunagee, Culdaff. Pete Smith A fairly standard Colmciller's evening trip. Alan Tees had a few new routes at Dunowen/Bunagee that he wanted a second opinion on, so Brian Martin and I went along to weigh them up. The weather was iffy with occasional showers all day, but we arrived in Culdaff in fairly dry, if not exactly summery, conditions. The first route was Newfoundland HS 4b, which is an awkward off-width on the seaward end of the headland next to the first zawn. We abseiled down to the rock platform.....ropeless (my fault). Alan got the job of scrambling back up the rope to get the rope! The route was led in fine style and seconded confidently by Brian. I was just glad that no-one was left to watch the way I crawled up it. Next, Alan led Martin McGuigan's Foot in Mouth VS 4c. This is to the right of Newfoundland and is considerably more difficult. However, the technicalities peter out less than halfway up, which is unfortunate because it could be a candidate for stars if it was longer. The last route of the night was Whiter Shade of Pale VS 4c. This is reached by a sea-level traverse past Kerry Widow. The route takes a thin, flaky-looking line up a vertical wall before gaining a slab and a fragmented corner to the top. My feeling was that it is a dangerously unprotected and chossy route. Alan laughed at my excessive imagination! By this time the weather was decidedly damp (i.e. bucketing down) so Alan
showed us a cave that he had rediscovered. If anyone wants a troglodytic,
subterranean adventure I thoroughly recommend a 3 yard belly-wriggle into
this amazing cavern. If you normally suffer from claustrophobia you will
enjoy it even more because the feeling of relief when you get back under
the sky is very, very good. |
