The week-end of Malin Beg I was working all day Saturday , but on Sunday Colleen and I headed that way. We were hoping to get to Malin Beg but run out of time so headed to Sail Rock and did the Roaring Forties 81M three pitches 4c, 4b,4c alternate leads.Great climb and a greater access to it. The weather was perfect. We used a rope and descended alpine style on very steep grass and bare rock. The climb is on the left hand side looking at the wall from the sea and the descent is on the right so a traverse along the bottom of the wall just above sea level is required. The protection on the first pitch is all small wires. 28m. The second pitch is 18m and uses some friends and ends on a good belay platform. The third pitch is 36m which is a fair length and caught me out because I ran out of rope and had to set up another belay six or so metres from the top, which lucky enough was not too bad. The last bit is a climber's dream; a wall covered in the most fantastic jugs ever. A nice walk back and a good meal in Killybegs completed a great day See you soon Martin. |
