CLIMBERS

Colmcille Climbers

Phil Magill Travels to Cornwall. July 2001.

Just back from a weekend in Sennen Cove in Cornwall where there are more jugs than your average copy of Big Whooters monthly, climbing on the finest granite outside of Ireland. With everything over here the grades are all under graded or I'm just not fit. 13 hours driving to get there, no rooms available anywhere, but it was 2am so in true outdoor'ish fashion the sleeping bag and bivi bag were dusted down and the nearest piece of flat ground was found. I had a great night's sleep, only to awake the next morning to discover that the flat piece of ground was in fact the first hole of Newquay golf course, a quick dash and the spinning of wheels had me safe and sound in a coffee shop for breakfast.

Next to the cove for a rainy start to the day and a VD to loosen up, nice climb. Feeling confident and the rain over a MVD was next. Bearing in mind this was put up in the 40's by a pack of Marines and boy what a climb. How many MVD are there that cause you to lean out and get pumped........ Simon was having a great laugh, thinking I'd let myself be sandbagged on this one, I puffed my way up only to read the guide book and YES it was indeed a MVD. A few more climbs followed and then to Coffee shop to round off the day, watch young ladies in wetsuits go surfing. NICE.
