CLIMBERS

Nigel McElhinney from Puerto Rico was in N. Ireland for a bit of climbing. Here's his report.

Well I'm now back in Puerto Rico but I did manage to climb at Fairhead and in the Mournes and we had a day of bouldering up by Lough Belshade in the Blue Stacks (as we spent 3 days hiking from Barnesmore through the Blue Stacks). I had 2 visitors with me and what with carting them around and catching up with family I didn't really have many more spare days. Fairhead was awesome and a great setting for climbing with wonderful views and great "exposure". We climbed Girona and some other route further round. I had a photocopied route description for Girona and some vague route descriptions for the other route.

The Mournes were also a great venue for climbing. Here I had a copy of the new guide book so we started up Lamagan on the multi-pitch slab route which was a fun and easy scramble. Later we visited Lower Cove and we put up a few of the easier routes there. I would need a month to really explore the possibilities in the Mournes as there is so much available. Hopefully next time I am home I will have some time to give you guys a call and we can get out and do some other climbing.

On our visit to the Blue Stacks I had a chance to run over and check out the Eglish area - definitely on my list to visit next time home if I don't get bogged on the approach! I have printed out your route information [See Pages] and this will be useful for my next visit. Anyway, thanks to the Colmcille Climbers for the help and suggestions.

Cheers, Nigel.
