Nevis & Meagaidh – 13th-14th Jan 2001

Ronnie Smith Ronnie Smith and Brian Johnston were there...... We were in Fortwilliam and the Ben was suprisingly, in poor nick for Mid-January. The ice was pretty thin on most climbs. Word had it that conditions were variable right across the Highlands. If you are in the know conditions are pretty good and if you know where to look. Word also had it that Glencoe and Creag Meagaidh were the best places. Anyway, a thaw and dump of wet snow should sort everything out. Nonetheless, on Saturday Brian and I climbed Comb Gully (IV, 5) on Ben Nevis and from previous times this was the leanest yet.

On Sunday, we went to Creag Meagaidh. We were hoping to miss the crowds, which were reported there on Saturday. The Post face was in tremendous condition with most routes in nick. This time we managed Last Post (V 5) in good time and little in the way of crowds. Wonderful weather and back to work on Monday morning. A super weekend. If any members want a conditions update I know a horse with a mouth if you know what I mean."
