CLIMBERS

Sally and Pete at Dunmore Head 30th March 2002

A brief report only. Sally Cook and I (Pete Smith) were unable to attend the Colmcillers' official visit to Dunmore Head on the 31st March 2002 so we went there the day before.

We had fine weather in a nice breeze and climbed about 4 routes including Diversion and Orange Blossom. We also did Belfast Blitz Boys - which I don't think I've ever done before.

A little lady called Aoife did her first rock climb, SRS Slab. Not bad for a five year old - I'm sure we all wish her a happy career on the rock.

Oh....Hang on a sec.....what's this I see? A report from Sals. Well, well, well. People will be thinking that this climbing club really does have other members and that I didn't make it all up in a drunken stupor.

Myself and Pete headed to Dunmore Head on a lovely spring day, for my first outing of the year. I, as is my wont, pleaded to stick with the easiest grades, so Pete consented to lead Belfast Blitz Boys, Absent Friends, Birds Nest Bulge, Orange Blossom and Diversion.

During the day the Unknown Family arrived, and Pete took a break to coach a slightly nervous newcomer up SRS Slab. Envious of her progress, I decided she had the advantage of youth on her side - after all, she was only five years old! At the end of the afternoon we declared the day a success (well, by my standards) and decided to head for a quick pint. However, negotiating the treacherous one hundred yard stretch from crag to car-park, disaster struck and I incurred my first climbing injury, when my foot found a small hole and I turned my ankle over. At that moment, I had an intense Joe Simpson experience, seeing the concern in Pete's eyes and fearing that he would decide to abandon me to my fate in that lonely wasteland, steal my car and go to McGrory's by himself. But fortunately for me, and with no regard to his own safety, he selflessly waited while I hobbled and cursed my way to the car. Funny how half an hour in the pub makes it all better.
