Colmcille Climbers go to Fairhead. 27th June 2000 Here is Donna Ryan's report of events on
27.6.00 Fairhead
Fairhead was certainly the "Derrymans" domain this evening or at least the prow was! Frankie and Michael were first out of the blocks arriving in time to pack in a plethora of routes commencing with Samson (VS 4C), led by Frankie and summed up as "carn ca`c" (translates to "load of dung"). Michael went on to lead Black Thief (VS 4b), the first of four ascents this evening; by myself seconded by Al Millar, Phil seconded by Golly and Alan Tees seconded by Bill and Sally. Phil also led (followed by Ian Chestnut) Driodar na hAille (HS) after Pete had tried. People are highly suspicious of the grade of this little gem. Golly led Bramble (S) with Liz as his second and Pete and Ian repeated the ascent. Meanwhile Al Millar was contemplating his second or fourth! redpoint of GBH (E3 6a/b) however he did eventually top out in fine style and buried the demons of times past once and for all. Prior to this Rodders did a "square" of the first three metres of Black Taxi (E1 5b) therefore this week the E equals Excrement. Whilst the queue was growing on Black Thief and other routes on the Prow, Frankie and Michael ventured into bolder territory, completing Aoife (E1 5b 5a). Frankie thought it was full of loose shite but doubtless he climbed it in fine Irish style and an all round faultless performance. Somewhere amidst this climbing frenzy Pete Smith and Bill took alternate leads on Chieftain (VS 4b 4b) and then later Bill followed Alan Tees up Salamander (VS 4c). That basically sums up a successful sunny
evening's cragging at Fairhead. There was a healthy turn out and the crack
was 90. Long may it last. Donna Ryan |
