CLIMBERS

Kinnego Bay, Co. Donegal. Sunday 3rd September 2000.

Pete Smith Michael McGinty, Zoe Stephenson and I went to Kinnego Bay with high hopes. Why does Kinnego do this to you? You set off full of expectation, you enjoy one route (Forked Lightning) and then you wonder why you bothered coming because there's nothing else to do. I suppose that you could do Austin's Window and Red Duster if you're up to it, but I'm not.

On the way around, Michael led Protestant Backlash HS at my suggestion. I don't think he'll listen to any of my suggestions again as this route hardly deserves the name; short, brutal, hard to grade and having very little to recommend it.

I did Forked Lightning VS. This is a genuinely good route and deserves its stars. By the time all three of us had got up, it was time for lunch. My simple fare looked rude in the extreme when Mikey and Zoe unpacked their picnic. First they spread a large blue and white gingham cloth on the rock platform below the Crow's Nest. Then they emptied their wicker hamper item by item. "A little glass of Sancerre, Zoe?"
"Oh, yes please, Michael, and could you pass the carving knife so that I can slice this Prosciutto?"
"No probs, Zoe. I wonder if you could do me a slice, I have my hands a bit full with this cheeseboard. Would you like some Rocquefort Pete, or perhaps a morsel of Dolcelatte?"
"No thanks", says I, "my cold sausage sandwich is quite sufficient thank you".

It sure is hard to beat a sausage sandwich (or, as some might say, it sure is good to beat a sausage sandwich).

After lunch Michael tried Clingen in the Rain HS but was put off by the mobile (but vital) hold. I led Die wrecked Severe.

We set up a top rope on Red Duster HVS and Michael came to the top looking a bit knackered so I gave it a miss. He says he has climbed E1s easier than this, and who am I to doubt it?

We went to Rosatos for a quick beer and then it was home again home again jiggedy jig.
