Rodney and myself left Derry on Saturday morning and headed towards Belshade (see report) but the weather worsened and by the far side of Ballybofey we could not bring ourselves to go any further. We turned back and went to my flat for a cup of tea.
Then inspiration. We rang the youth hostel and the post office at Ballycastle for a weather report and they both gave us the go ahead. So we went to Fair head and did Hurricane and Railroad. The next day Stuart Rodney and Myself went to Eglish based on the fine sunny condidtions in Derry but just when we were about to do some new routes it rained and the whole middle of the day was miserable and we left the place in a depression. The only thing climbed was an ascent in the wet of the other Alan's VS on the left side of the vertical wall.
We drove home in weather that had turned cheekily fine again, but robbed of our motivation we vowed never to go near the place again. Monday we went to Glengad head and had a much better day. Myself and Rodney did Salty Dog. Then I put up a new route on the right side of the main wall called Colhoun's Route. Rodney did the 2nd ascent of Grimer in Zion and Stuart enjoyed the sun (to read more about sunbathing - click here). We went for pints in Mc Grorys and a Burger in the Boston Burger in Carndonagh.
Colhoun's route E3 5c Climb the overhangs as for Geographer Paul. Traverse right using good footholds till underneath the right hand of the two holes in the face. Move up past this to huge hole at overhang. (Step right for rest if you like) Then layback over hand on left side to thin stance above. Continue with sustained thin moves up headwall to the top.
