Owey Island Weekend, 23/24th September 2000. Martin McGuigan What a great week-end! Cap'n Schwarzbeard Barnacle Wilhelm von der Zeitgeist Appalachian Clog Dance Le Clerc-Gigot, Alan Tees, Margaret Pailing, Mary McGuigan and I gathered at Cruit on Saturday morning. We got out to Owey at 11.00am and did the tour. Went over to the Dragon zawn and cleaned a few routes. I liked The Big Square Chute and cleaned a route on it, and one just around the corner which Alan and I climbed taking alternate leads; Light in the Western Sky VS 4b 50m. Saturday night we lit a fire and had a few drinks after a good meal. A beaut of a thunder storm put us to bed around 10.00pm. Sunday morning and away with the sky clearing . Alan and I climbed the Dragon which is a small island or stack of rock opposite last year's route, Dragons breath. This went at about Diff 40m. For the grade this is a very enjoyable climb with a very narrow arete and some fine aiguilles. We finished off with our 3rd new route (Comedy of Errors HVS 5a, 40m, single pitch, Martin McGuigan and Alan Tees). This was my first visit to Owey and definitely not my last. I must give our Captain the highest honour for braving the high seas and getting us there and back without a hitch. He brought Margaret and Mary to the mainland on Sunday morning to go for a walk over Errigal and beyond. Great activity all round ; three cheers for Owey and the CCC Martin (PS what about Gola??) |
